HISTÒRIA
El purgatori és un regne on les ànimes de les criatures sobrenaturals van després de la seva mort. La seva ubicació física està separat del Cel i l'Infern. Crowley estima que hi ha  30-40 milions d'ànimes allà. Originalment va ser creat per Déu per contenir les criatures més antigues, leviatans, per por de destruir la resta de la creació.Crowley fa un tracte amb Castiel per a que es localitzi el Purgatori per poder accedir a totes les ànimes allà per tal d'utilitzar el poder de les ànimes allotjades allà. Es instigar un pla en el qual usen a Samuel Campbell, aconseguint el seu acord amb la promesa per ressuscitar a Mary, per capturar els Alfa de cada monstre que estan convençuts de conèixer la seva ubicació. 

Quan els Dracs retornen a n'Eva , el progenitor de tots els monstres que ha estat en el Purgatori més de 10.000 anys, Castiel i Crowley sabien que capturar-los pot donar-los accés al purgatori, però el pla es va frustrar quan Dean la mata.Eleanor Visyak, una vella amiga de Bobby, es revela com una criatura que va escapar Purgatori a l'any 1937. Castiel i Crowley la torturen fins a la mort per tal d'obtenir la seva sang i el ritual secret que obrirà una porta al Purgatori. Després Castiel obre el portal, i absorbeix a milions d'ànimes i es proclama a si mateix un déu.  

Desesperat per aturar la fúria iracunda de Castiel a la Terra, Sam, Dean i Bobby s'uneixen per a matar a n'en Castiel. Castiel llança els mort i els diu que ha tingut no només les ànimes dels monstres, també els Leviatans. Ell els diu que han de tornar a obrir la porta al Purgatori i tornar a les ànimes i les criatures. La mort s'encarrega d'un altre eclipsi lunar perquè puguin fer el ritual. Dean obre la porta al purgatori i les ànimes retornen, però els leviatans són massa forts, i romanen a la terra dins de Castiel.

Més tard, Dean, amb l'ajuda de Castiel, mata al líder Leviatan Dick Romà que dóna lloc a ell i Castiel ser absorbit pel Purgatori.Castiel desapareix després i Dean l'intenta trobar mentre lluiten contra els monstres que hi viuen. Un vampir anomenat Benny diu a n'en Dean hi ha una forma en què un ésser humà pot escapar el Purgatori, i va a ajudar a Dean. Dean escapa del Purgatori amb l'ànima de Benny en el seu interior, el que li va permetre ressuscitar al vampir. Finalment els àngels, sota el comandament de Naomi, envaeixen el Purgatori i el rescat d'en Castiel costa les vides de molts àngels.

Quan Sam ha de viatjar a l'infern per rescatar l'ànima de'n Bobby cantant com a part de la segona prova per tancar les portes de l'infern, la parca Ajay el porta al Purgatori on hi ha una "porta del darrere" a l'infern, un portal situat darrere d'una roca entre tres arbres que creixen junts. Sam és capaç d'utilitzar el portal per viatjar a l'infern i tornar amb Bobby, però acaben atrapats en el purgatori quan Ajay és assassinat per Crowley. No obstant això, Benny torna al purgatori i els porta a la porta de sortida, però es queda enrere per contenir a un grup de vampirs en lloc d'escapar de nou.


HISTORY
Purgatory is a realm where the souls of supernatural creatures go after they die. Its physical location is separate from both Heaven and Hell. Crowley estimates there are 30-40 million souls there. It was originally created by God to contain the oldest creatures, Leviathans, for fear they would destroy the rest of creation.

Crowley makes a deal with Castiel that they will locate Purgatory in order to access all the souls there in order to use the power of the souls housed there.They instigate a plan where they use Samuel Campbell, getting his agreement with a promise to resurrect Mary, to capture the Alpha monsters who they are convinced know its location.

When Dragons raise Eve, the progenitor of all monsters who has been in Purgatory for 10,000 years, Castiel and Crowley know that capturing her can give them access to Purgatory but the plan is thwarted when Dean kills her.

Eleanor Visyak, an old friend of Bobby's, is revealed to be a creature that escaped Purgatory in 1937. Castiel and Crowley torture her to death in order to obtain her blood and the secret ritual which will open a door to Purgatory. After Castiel opens the portal, he imbibes millions of souls and proclaims himself a god.

Desperate to stop Castiel's wrathful rampage on Earth, Sam, Dean and Bobby bind Death in order to Kill Castiel. Castiel releases Death, who tells them Castiel has taken in not only the souls of monsters, but the Leviathans. He tells them that they need to re-open the door to Purgatory and return the souls and creatures. He arranges for another lunar eclipse so they can perform the ritual. Dean opens the door to Purgatory and the souls do return, but the Leviathans are too strong, and stay on earth inside Castiel.Later, Dean, with the help of Castiel, kills Leviathan leader Dick Roman which results in him and Castiel getting sucked into Purgatory.

Castiel disappears after and Dean tries to find him while battling the monsters who live there. A vampire named Benny tells Dean there is a way a human can escape Purgatory, and he'll help Dean find it for Dean taking him through the portal. Dean escapes Purgatory with Benny's soul inside him, allowing him to resurrect the vampire. Eventually angels, under the command of Naomi, invade Purgatory and rescue Castiel at the cost of many angels lives.

When Sam needs to travel to Hell to rescue Bobby Singer's soul as part of the second trial to close the gates of Hell, rogue Reaper Ajay takes him to Purgatory where there is a "backdoor" to Hell, a portal located behind a boulder between three trees that grow together. Sam is able to use the portal to travel to Hell and back with Bobby, but they end up trapped in Purgatory when Ajay is killed by Crowley. However, Benny returns to Purgatory and leads them to the exit portal, but stays behind to hold off a group of vampires rather than escaping again.
